S.E.:L. PSX -- Report One

Sorry that the previous post is fragmented... its just that the emotion of "joy" is kind of new to me and so my brain gave out - I will explain what is going on.

For those of you who don't know, Serial Experiments: Lain has three parts (thus "serial" and the plural form of "experiment"). Those parts are a small manga (which can be found here: http://www.cjas.org/~leng/lmanga.htm ), the anime series we all know and love, and the PSX game.

The game is two discs and is not so much a game as it is a massive collection of disembodied Lain media. The playing of the "game" is the navigating of a giant network of media including anime clips (new anime - not from the other part of the experiments), Lain's audio diary entries, recordings of Lain's therapy sessions, and various other little media. The "game" as a whole would be EXTREMELY boring to anyone that was not fanatically obsessed (like me) - with all the movies and various trippy displays/graphics asside, the game feels more like a fragmented radio drama than an actual game.

But hey, Lain is Lain....... right? ;)

My current goal is to rip all of the media off of the discs, but I have thus far been unsuccessful. I have tried about 10 utilities yet have only managed to rip out the following media...

37 basic (tiny) interface sounds
44 basic (tiny) interface graphics
2 creepy midi
416 audio tracks ranging from 4 seconds to ~5 minutes - average around a minute

The interface sounds, interface graphics, and midis were on both discs and are a part of the interface in which the media is launched (the game is played). But while I managed to rip quite a few audio tracks, I got all of them off the first disc. I haven't been able to get any off the second disc (yet), and I am assuming there is a crap load more there.

Anyways, what is REALLY important to me are the movies - THOSE are what I REALLY want... yet while all the ripping utilities I have used can FIND them and give me information about how many frames they are etc., whenever I try to play/rip them the whole utility crashes. I have tried about 10 different ripping utilities yet they have all crashed.

If you know of any utilities that are good at ripping the media off of PSX-j games, then please post them here or e-mail me a link to them. In my next post I will post a listing of all the utilities that I have tried (and failed) to use... and maybe the midis and a couple graphics.
